Useless Objects // Useful Things
Installed at Smith College Department of Art, Northampton, MA
Spring 2021
It is hard for me to imagine using common objects as subject matter without in some way referencing the excess of material goods in our world. Few of us can escape the proliferation of man-made objects that surround us every day. The themes of habit, accumulation, collection, use, and uselessness were primary in my thinking throughout the creation of Useless Objects // Useful Things.
The work also examines the desire to both create and order in a world already overflowing with material things. There is a certain comfort that comes from physical objects, and I chose to use this subject as an impetus for creating more objects. Objects that, I believe, are both useful and useless. They exist in the nebulous space between the two realms, examining art as well as utility. Useless Objects // Useful Things looks at both with a raised eyebrow and a sense of humor.
